Achieving balance with SuiteFiles CEO, Andrew Sims

By June 21, 2018April 9th, 2024No Comments

Andrew Sims is the CEO and captain at the helm here at SuiteFiles. Inbox zero is a far off dream and there’s always a phone call to make, but Andrew juggles it all alongside a busy family life, sport (mostly for the kids), and a new puppy. We talked to him to see how he makes it work.

What do you do day-to-day/long term to ensure you have a good work-life balance?

I do a few things. I try to use my calendar to manage my work tasks as best as I can, I exercise when possible (though it doesn’t come naturally), and I play sports – social cricket, mates in bowls, and golden oldies rugby. I also coach kids sports. It’s a good way for me to be involved and I try to watch as much of the kids’ activities as I can.

Do you think you’re good at maintaining a balance?

Hard to say, I’m not really sure what work life balance really means. Sometimes I want to work – it’s interesting and challenging, or I’m behind on things. In my mind, I’m making that choice and I’m comfortable with that. When I’m not working, I’m still working, just on other things, like the house. Having down time is rare in my life. I’m just busy doing many different things.

How do you choose what to prioritise in both work and life?

Well, I’m married, so what my wife says is always a high priority! I’ve always prided myself on being able to juggle many things at once and get everything done. That’s now a lot harder to do and some things I need to say no to. How do I decide? What I can add value to ends up at the top of the list, and if I can’t, there isn’t much point in prioritising those things for me.

What is your advice to other people who feel like they’re struggling with work-life balance?

Make time for yourself and your interests, even if it means you’re still really busy. Getting out with some friends and enjoying an activity is a must. They say no one goes to the grave wishing they had done more work or hours in the office. Be efficient, don’t muck around while at your desk so you can go home and enjoy yourself.

What is a book/podcast/TV show/website/app/etc. that you love right now and would recommend?

I’ve always enjoyed the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It’s an oldie and it’s right out there meaning you can disconnect completely while reading it.
